A tragic train derailment in the southern state of Oaxaca has resulted in the deaths of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive censure from critics regarding the pace and handling of the country's flagship infrastructure initiatives.
The accident took place on the Interoceanic Train, a line developed to connect the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific across the slenderest section of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was intended to establish an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, intended to promote economic development in the area.
“We are going to rigorously clarify what caused this tragedy,” declared the country's president.
The official confirmed that, of the around 250 people on board, another 98 were wounded, with five of those in serious condition. The president noted plans to travel to Oaxaca to confer with those affected.
Key Undertaking of Former Government
The Interoceanic Train was a central development scheme of the previous administration, whose time in office ended the prior year. This rail line was intimately linked to his leadership's strategic agenda for the southern region.
Another multi-billion dollar train initiative from that era, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the wider plan to stimulate the economic fortunes of a comparatively poorer part of the country.
Building Management and Risks Apprehensions
The building of both railway systems was supervised by the armed forces, marking a dramatic expansion of its duties in national works. They were completed at an accelerated speed, defying expectations to be partially inaugurated before the end of that government.
However, this rushed timetable had concurrently raised persistent concerns over operational security.
- Sunday's crash was the third such incident on the Interoceanic Train within the past twelve months.
- This includes an previous accident this month when a train smashed into a truck at a level crossing.
- The other major rail project has also experienced a couple of non-fatal derailments.
Appeals for Audit and Pause
In the aftermath of the tragedy, the head of a key rival party urged an urgent halt in the construction and operation of all such projects.
This stoppage was proposed until the completion of a comprehensive independent investigation. The party declared that the situation "demands prompt explanations."
In response, the head of state insisted that the train had been running in full compliance with all security protocols. Assurances were given that the government would be "accountable" in both the construction and running of these strategic initiatives.
